He attended St. Francis de Sales Church, Woodward High School, and the University of Toledo. He was the founder of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee for pediatric cancer in 1962. He died on February 6, 1991 in Los Angeles, California, USA.
