Italian actress born Sofia Villani Scicolone on September 20, 1934 in Rome, Lazio, Italy. She participated at age fourteen in a beauty contest in Naples, and was chosen among the final contestants. Loren became an international leading actress as she signed a five-picture contract with Paramount Pictures. She married producer Carlo Ponti and they have two children, Carlo Ponti Jr. and Edoardo Ponti. Among her films Desire Under the Elms (1958), and Vittorio De Sica's Two Women (1960), for which she received many awards, including an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
