Nia (...Read moremeaning: Life purpose) Talita Long was born in Brooklyn, New York. Her family is of Trinidadian, Grenadian, Vincentian, and Bajan descent in the Caribbean region of North America. She has an older half-sister, Sommore, who is an actress and a comedian. She has two sons, Kez Udoka and Massai Dorsey. Long Attended Santa Monica College in California, and next to her academic education, she studied ballet, tap, jazz, gymnastics, guitar, and acting. She was coached in acting for fifteen years by Betty Bridges, mother of Todd Bridges. Long’s first role was in the Disney Television Series, The B.R.A.T Patrol (aired in 1986). Long then signed a three-year contract (1991-94) for her role as Kathryn in Guiding Light, the longest-running soap opera in American history. Her first film debut was in Boyz n the Hood (1991) and from 1994-95 she co-starred in the series, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air with Will Smith. Long played leading roles in the comedy drama, Soul Food (1997); the romantic drama, Love Jones (1997); the crime drama, Boiler Room (2000), the action comedy (Big Momma’s House) and the family comedy, Are We There Yet? (2005). Long was the star in the romantic comedy film, The Best Man (1999) and its sequel, The Best Man Holiday (2013). She is a co-star in the survival horror film, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged (2019). In the television series world, Long participated in the crime drama series, Third Watch (2003-05); the legal drama series, Judging Amy (2001-02); the animated sitcom, The Cleveland Show (2009-10); the comedy series, House of Lies (2012); the TV drama film, Beaches (2017) and the action series, NCIS: Los Angeles, seasons 9-10 (2017-18). For the music industry, Nia Long appeared in the song, “Touch the Sky” by singer, Kayne West. Long also co-directed and appeared in Ashanti Douglas's music video, "Baby". In 2000, Nia Long won two awards for her role in The Best Man (1999): Black Reel Award for Best Actress, and NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture. NAACP: National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. In 2004 and 2005, she won NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Officer Sasha Monroe in Third Watch (2003-05). She also won Acapulco Black Film Festival Award for Best Cast for her role in The Best Man Holiday (2013).
