He started his career with student films in 1991 and then directed Chicano Chariot. In 1993, he acted in Dazed and Confused. In the early 2000s, he did many romantic comedies, such as The Wedding Planner with Jennifer Lopez and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days alongside Kate Hudson. In 2011, he starred in The Lincoln Lawyer. Two years later he acted in The Wolf of Wall Street alongside Leonardo DiCaprio. In the same year, he was the lead actor in Dallas Buyers Club, for which he won an Oscar.
