Among his first public experience was the short film The Orchid Gardener (1978). In 1984, he released his first feature film, The Element of Crime, after which his works continued. In 1992, he co-founded a film production company with producer Peter Aalbæk Jensen. His credits include Melancholia (2011), The Early Years: Erik Nietzsche Part 1 (2007), and Dancer in the Dark (2000), for which he won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
