He joined the army during World War II, where he trained as an army surgical technician. He also obtained a master’s degree in English from Brooklyn College in New York. Shortly thereafter, his first novel "The Warriors" was published in 1965, in addition to the novels "The Bag" and "Someone Just Like You". He died of lung cancer on January 5, 2013.
