German director who was born Ernst Wilhelm Wenders on August 14, 1945 in Düsseldorf, Germany. He studied medicine at the University of Freiburg and shifted to philosophy at the University of Dusseldorf but dropped out and went to Paris to become a painter in 1966. He didn't...Read more manage to get admitted in the French national film school. He used to attend movie houses until he returned to Germany in 1967. He joined the University of Television and Film Munich school in 1967. At the time, he worked as a newspaper film critic and directed short films until he directed the movie, Summer in the City (1971). He became part of the German New Wave of the 1970s with directors Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Werner Herzog. Producer Francis Ford Coppola gave Wenders the opportunity to direct movies in the U.S.A. His movie Paris, Texas (1984) received three awards at Cannes, including the Palme d'Or, and Wenders won a BAFTA for best director. He also directed documentaries, such as Buena Vista Social Club (1999) and Pina (2011), both of which nominated him for an Oscar.
