An British actress, born on January 31, 1929 in London. She began her career at the age of 14 by participating in the film Give Us the Moon (1944). Among the most prominent films in which she participated are Guys and Dolls (1955), Spartacus (1960), and Elmer Gantry (1960)....Read more She won the Best Actress Award at the Venice Film Festival for her performance as Ophelia in Hamlet (1948). She also won an Emmy Award in 1983 for her role in the famous American miniseries The Thorn Birds. Simmons has played for seven decades in nearly fifty films and thirty television series. She was nominated twice for an Academy Award, the second time for her role in the movie The Happy Ending (1969), directed by her then-husband, Richard Brooks, where she played the role of an alcoholic wife. This role was part of her real life, as she was already addicted to drinking alcohol and underwent treatment. She died in her home in Santa Monica, California, of lung cancer on January 22, 2010.
