Biography

An Italian actor and director, who studied at the Silvio D'Amico National Academy of Dramatic Arts. He began his theatrical work in Milan in 1943, and after he achieved remarkable success on stage, in 1946, he moved to work in the cinema, making his debut in Daniele Cortis...Read more (1947). In 1953, Gassman signed contracts with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer then other international production companies. Among his successful films from that period is War and Peace (1955). Among his other notable films are Kean: Genius or Scoundrel (1957), Il Sorpasso (1962), and Scent of a Woman (1974), which won him the Best Actor Award at the 1975 Cannes Film Festival. In 1981, Gassman published a memoir entitled Un grande avvenire dietro le spalle, and in 1990, he published another book, Memorie del sottoscala.
