Australian novelist, screenwriter, and university professor. He was born in Bacchus Marsh, Australia. He went to Geelong Grammar School from 1954 to 1960 after attending Bacchus Marsh State School from 1948 to 1953. He enrolled at the then-new Monash University in Melbourne in...Read more 1961 to pursue a scientific degree with a focus on chemistry and biology, but he eventually dropped out. He started his career in advertising in 1962, working for a number of large commercial firms' advertising agencies. He began writing literary works during that period and went on to publish multiple stories and novels. He won many literary awards, most notably the Booker Prize for the novel, True History of the Kelly Gang. He is a member of the Royal Society of Literature and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Many of his literary works have been adapted into cinematic works, such as Oscar and Lucinda (1997), Dead End Drive-In (1986), and Bliss (1985).
