Mackenzie Davis was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Her mother is from South Africa; her father is English and together they own AG Hair Care, the largest independent manufacturer of hair care products in British Columbia, Canada.

She was particularly interested in the Meisner technique of acting in which an actor would focus on the other person, not on themselves. In 2011, Davis appeared in the short film, Alex (2011), and the following year in Smashed (2012). In the same year, she was in an episode of I Just Want My Pants Back (2012) called “Safety Nets”. A year later, she was discovered by Drake Doremus who gave her a debut in his feature film Breathe In (2013). In 2013, Davis also received a Canadian Screen Award nomination for her role in What If (2013). In 2014, she took the lead role in the TV series Halt and Catch Fire (2014) as computer programmer, Cameron Howe. In year 2015, she appeared in The Martian (2015) as a NASA satellite communications engineer named Mindy Park. She also starred in Freaks of Nature (2015), A Country Called Home (2015) and short film Memory Box (2015). In 2016, Davis appeared in the anthology series, Black Mirror, as Yorkie in the episode called “San Junipero”. In 2019, Davis plays Grace, a human-machine hybrid sent from the future in Terminator: Dark Fate (2019). Mackenzi Davis received the Tribeca Film Festival Award for Best Actress for her role in Always Shine (2016).
