He started performing with a group of street actors in Palermo. In 1989, he got a small part in a theatrical production, Waiting for Godot. He then gave up medical school, and went to Rome to attend the Silvio D'Amico Academy of Dramatic Arts. He won the David di Donatello Award for Best Leading Actor for his role in One Hundred Steps (2000). His works include The Best of Youth (2003) and The Ideal City (2012).
