The Bread Peddler, which was published in the period from 1884 to 1889 and was later converted into television, theatrical and cinematic artworks. Some of his novels provoked comments and storms when they were published, such as the novel Physician to the Poor, which led to a judicial confrontation between him and a republican lawyer in the courts, in which the two were sentenced on bail. His novel The Daughters of the Plasterer, led to a sentence of three months in prison and a fine of 500 francs. He died on April 30, 1902 in Paris.
