American actor, born on March 22, 1913 in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. He spent a large part of his career on the stage, not only as an actor, but as a designer, producer and director. He became interested in theater as a young man and joined the famous Pasadena Community Theater...Read more in Gilmore Brown in the 1930s, where he appeared in dozens of plays. He had also appeared in several films since 1940, he moved to New York City and appeared on Broadway. He won two New York Drama Critics Circle Awards for his supporting roles. Then he returned to Hollywood, participated in more than 40 films. He maintained an interest in theater. Among his most prominent works are: On the Waterfront (1954), True Grit (1969) and Hang 'Em High (1968). He died on September 20, 1971 in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, of a heart attack.
