American actress, who was born in Wichita, Kansas, USA on June 10, 1895. She won an Oscar in 1940 and two stars on the Walk of Fame in 1960 for her work in radio and film. She married four times: Howard Hickman (1911-1915), and she remained with him until his death; George...Read more Langford 1922 who died a few months later; James Lloyd Crawford (1941-1945); and Larry Williams (1949-1950). Her most important works include Gone with the Wind (1939), The Great Lie (1941), and Since You Went Away (1944). She was a black African American actress, also known as Hattie, a singer and dancer before appearing on the cinema screen in the movie The Golden West (1932). She was the first black to win an Oscar, the first African-American woman to sing on radio, and the first African-American to attend the Academy Awards as a guest. She died on October 26, 1952 in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, USA, of breast cancer. She was the first African-American to be buried in the Los Angeles Cemetery.
