She was a black African American actress, also known as Hattie, a singer and dancer before appearing on the cinema screen in the movie The Golden West (1932). She was the first black to win an Oscar, the first African-American woman to sing on radio, and the first African-American to attend the Academy Awards as a guest. She died on October 26, 1952 in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, USA, of breast cancer. She was the first African-American to be buried in the Los Angeles Cemetery.
