Biography

Zafer Al Sabouni was a Syrian writer and journalist. In the late 1940s and early 1950s he was a manager in the Syrian public radio. He published a weekly newspaper in 1954, which became a daily publication a year later in Damascus. In 1957, he was appointed as Syria's...Read more representative in the Arab League in Cairo and he lived there till 1974. In 1959, he wrote the radio series "The Knight of Beni Hemdan", the first historical drama, and it was one of many historical dramas he wrote afterwards for the Egyptian radio. The first TV series he wrote for Egyptian TV was titled "Heaven's Message" directed by Ahmed Tawfik and starring Ahmed Mazhar and Mahmoud El Meleigy. In 1974, he returned to Syria under instructions from President Hafez al-Assad, where he resumed his literary, journalistic and radio work. He passed away on 24 July 1988 in his hometown of Aleppo.
