He married actress Margaret Leighton (1964-1976) and remained with her until she died. He did not marry after that until he died on July 8, 1979 in London, England, United Kingdom. His most important works include In Which We Serve (1942), Under Capricorn (1949), and Stage Fright (1950). He left school to pursue a career in cinematography and got a job in a film art studio in 1933, which gave him the opportunity to get acquainted with many producers and directors. His first role was in the movie Bitter Sweet (1933). He was known for playing supporting roles. He traveled to Hollywood where he worked with Alfred Hitchcock. He was a plastic artist, who spent long periods of his life drawing oil paintings and retired from cinematic work in his late days to devote himself to painting.
