Austrian actress, born on January 12, 1910 in Dusseldorf, German Empire. She began her career in 1926. She became a legend in the 1930s after winning an Oscar in 1936 for The Great Ziegfeld, and 1937 for The Good Earth. Her last hit film was Hostages (1943). She quit cinema...Read more afterwards. In 1997, she returned to the big screen again with her participation in the movie The Gambler. She spent a large part of her life in Switzerland, after leaving Hollywood. She then travelled to London, where she died. Her last appearance was in 2003 in a drama film of a joint American-German production. She died on December 30, 2014 at the age of 104. The late star had several political inclinations, as she was one of the defenders of the establishment of the Second Republic in Spain and also collected donations to host the Republican children who fled the horrors of the civil war in Spain.
