An American actor born in New Haven, Connecticut, on July 4, 1902. He received an Academy Honorary Award in 1951 and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. In 1945 he became president of the Screen Actors Guild, retired from acting in 1952, and worked as a television producer. In 1964, he was elected to the California State Senate. He died on May 3, 1992 of leukemia.
