He is the son of a traveling country physician, Dr. Isaac Mordecai Howard, and his wife, Hester Jane Ervin Howard was a woman of charity who suffered from tuberculosis. He spent his early life wandering through Texas cowtowns and boomtowns due to his father's work since he was 13 years old. He used to listen to tales of ghosts from his grandmother as well as tales of war veterans. He used to visit forts and ancient sites, which later influenced his writing. He suffered from depression as his mother had a long struggle with tuberculosis. During her last coma, the nurse told his family that she would not wake up, so he took a pistol and shot himself in the head on the morning of June 11, 1936. He died 8 hours later, and his mother died the next morning and they were buried together.
