An American actor and writer, born on July 18, 1913, in Vincennes, Indiana, USA, as Richard Red Skelton. Red Skelton won a Golden Globe Award in 1959, an Emmy Award in 1952 and again in 1961, and two stars on the Walk of Fame in 1960 for his work on radio and television, among...Read more other awards. His most important work includes Ship Ahoy (1942), The Red Skelton Hour (1961-1971), and Susan Slept Here (1954). He began his career at the age of seven by working in vaudeville shows, and at the age of ten, he traveled with a touring troupe. In 1937, he started working on the radio, and the following year he worked in cinema. In 1951, he signed a seven-year contract with MGM, presenting his television shows, which aired for twenty continuous years. The death of his son Richard of leukemia at the age of nine, caused him to support many children's charities. During World War II, he served in the US Army. Red Skelton died on September 17, 1997, in Rancho Mirage, California, of pneumonia.
