An American actress, born in Omaha, Nebraska, USA, on June 16, 1916, as Dorothy Hackett McGuire. She received the NYFCC Award in 1947 for the movie Gentleman's Agreement (1947) the NBR Award in 1956 for the movie Friendly Persuasion (1956), and a star on the Walk of Fame in 1960....Read more She married John Swope (1943-1979), with whom she had two children, and she remained with him until his death. Among her most important movies are The Spiral Staircase (1945), A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945), and Old Yeller (1957). She studied at at Omaha Junior College, Ladywood Convent in Indianapolis, and Pine Manor Junior College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and worked in the theater in Omaha and then on Broadway. In the mid-1940s, she signed a contract with 20th Century-Fox, appearing in movies, then she returned to the theater, and in the mid-sixties, she turned to television series until her death on September 13, 2001 in Santa Monica, California, USA.
