Lew was discovered in a nightclub in Los Angeles, after which he broke into Hollywood as a supporting actor and participated in the film The Kiss (1929) then in the anti-war film All Quiet on the Western Front (1930). He was a conscientious objector to World War II. In the fifties, he turned to radio and television and achieved remarkable after falling into a coma that lasted for a few days.
