He was the primary cinematographer for American film producer Samuel Goldwyn and was largely responsible for the success of films such as The Dark Angel (1925). Among his notable works are Rebecca (for which he earned an Oscar for Best Cinematography) and The Greatest Show on Earth. He married seven times, the first marriage was to actress Helen Howell in 1915, and his last one was to Margaret Atkinson. He Died on May 30, 1953 in Los Angeles, California, USA due to surgery complications.
