An American actor, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. He received a star on the Walk of Fame in 1960. He is known for This Gun for Hire (1942), The Black Swan (1942), Heaven Can Wait (1943), and Hangover Square (1945). He became one of the distinguished screen villains in the golden age of Hollywood.
At the age of eight, his parents sent him to England to enroll in Winchester College, and there, he wanted to be a professional actor. He returned to the United States of America, where he joined the Episcopal Academy in Philadelphia and Douglas Adams School in New Jersey. He received a scholarship to study drama in Pasadena Community Playhouse.
He worked and excelled on Broadway, which made film companies flock to him. He was contracted by Twentieth Century-Fox and presented 6 films with them, including Blood and Sand (1941) and Charley's Aunt (1941). He died of a heart attack on December 9, 1944, in Los Angeles, California, USA, at the age of 31.
