He is known for Humoresque (1946), Romance on the High Seas (1948), and An American in Paris (1951). He studied music at an early age with the help of his brothers and with great encouragement from his mother. He graduated from the Leipzig Institute of Music and played on Broadway and in many nightclubs. He participated in many musicals and worked as a composer. He worked in more than 20 films composing and acting in light comedic roles. He spent a lot of time in mental hospitals and became addicted to many drugs.
