He is known for Murder, My Sweet (1944), Nightmare Alley (1947), Some Like It Hot (1959), and It's Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963). He was a professional soccer player, and he graduated from Manhattan College in 1930 after obtaining a BA of Arts. He started acting in the forties with small minor roles, and for 50 years, he presented the character of a thug and a gangster, taking advantage of his huge structure and the rigidity of his features. He made significant contributions to professional wrestling, and in the 1960s, he founded the Jolly Flower organization, a non-profit organization that grants scholarships and financial aid to retired and injured wrestlers and their families.
