A Japanese composer and writer, born in Tokyo, Japan. He studied music for a short time with the artist Yasuji Kiyose. He was influenced by the United States' radio broadcasts to its soldiers in Japan in the aftermath of World War II, as it devoted three hours every afternoon to music. He was influenced by Bruno Walter, Arturo Toscanini, and Paul Whiteman. Takemitsu participated in a number of works, such as the movies Harakiri (1962) and Ran (1985).
