Their marriage lasted 10 years, during which they had twins, but it ended in divorce, followed by a dispute over custody of the twins, which Hayward won in 1956. These personal problems affected his film career, after which he worked for some time on the radio and television. His most notable work includes Cover Girl (1944), Scarlet Street (1945), and Reign of Terror (1949). He died in North Hollywood, California, on August 8, 2000.
