Brooks graduated from West Philadelphia School and attended Philadelphia University for two years. He worked as a sports reporter and radio journalist in the 1930s and also worked as a writer for NBC. He worked as a theater director in New York for a year, then went to Los Angeles and worked as a screenwriter for low-production films. He contracted with MGM, and his films were always attractive. Richard Brooks' most important movies include Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), Elmer Gantry (1960), and In Cold Blood (1967). Richard Brooks died on March 11, 1992, in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California, of heart failure.
