She was born in London to a father who worked as a court judge and an advisor to the king, and her mother was the cousin of the American Confederate leader Robert Lee. She was educated in Paris and Vienna, and because her aunt was the actress and theater director Auriol Lee, she shifted to acting. She studied theater in Vienna, stood on stage in London in 1933, and presented her first film, The Lady is Willing (1934) before going to Hollywood and signing a contract with 20th Century Fox. She is known for hher several series, especially the series Perry Mason (1957), where she participated in 6 episodes. Her last work was the series Adam-12 (1975). She retired afterwards. She had the talent to become a high-profile movie star, but her actions and outspoken opinions about other stars prevented her from taking the right place.
