A Canadian-American actress, born in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada, as Leila Marie Koerber. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1931 and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. Marie Dressler is a comedic and dramatic actress in theatre, silent films, talkies, burlesque opera, and vaudeville. She was a Depression-era movie star who became one of the top box office stars. She was born to a German-born officer father who participated in the Crimean War and then worked as a music teacher. Her first appearance in acting was the role of Cupid at the age of five in church. At the age of 14, she participated in a local traveling band for $6 a week, half of which she sent to her mother. After 3 years, she joined an opera company for $8 per week until 1892 when she joined Broadway. She hoped to become an opera singer, but because of her comedic performance, she stopped working in theatres. In 1900, she formed a theater group, which soon declared bankruptcy. She married James Dalton, traveled with him to England, and performed at the Palace Theater for $1,500 a week. She returned to Broadway and starred in the vaudeville theater. In 1910, she performed on Broadway. She entertained the American infantry forces during World War I and wrote, produced, and directed some short silent films. In 1918, she became outside the field of artistic work, due to her leadership of a girls' strike and she lost all her savings. She was forgotten by the age of 59, but MGM screenwriter Francis Marion assigned her a role. With the introduction of sound into movies, she made several talkies, the first of which was The Hollywood Revue (1929), but she suffered a lot in regaining her popularity. However, she starred in the movie Min and Bill (1930) later on, won an Oscar, and dominated the box office. She was nominated for the award for the movie Emma (1932). Her last movie was Christopher Bean (1933). She died in Santa Barbara, California, USA, on July 28, 1934, from cancer.
