He became famous for his role as Busy in the Andy Hardy film series in the 1930s. During World War II, he served in the Signal Corps in the Pacific Theater of Operations as a photographer. After the war, he returned to cinema as a director, producer, and writer. He made feature films and documentaries in Brazil, the Congo, and Kenya, where he settled. He went to Japan in 1951 and directed and shot two Hollywood films, Oriental Evil (1951) and Geisha Girl (1952). He also produced the television series African Patrol, which was filmed in Kenya. He also made several films in Yugoslavia. He died in Paris, France, on May 21, 1973.
