Egyptian filmmakers were shocked to learn that the films “Ibn al-Qonsol” (“Consul’s Son”) and “al-Lemby 8 Giga” were broadcast by an unknown channel. The mysterious network also promises to air “Zahaymer” (“Alzheimer’s”) and “Muhtarram ila Rub’” (“Respectable Less One Quarter”) soon.Salah Ramzy, an official at the al-Nasr company which is the official distributor of “Ibn al-Qonsol” has announced that these events represent a real-life catastrophe which must be opposed. Ramzy has also stated that this form of piracy, manifested in the appearance of an unknown channel is more troubling than internet piracy as the sources of internet piracy are known whereas the sources of such a channel are unidentified. The channel has appeared on satellite networks set up in slum neighborhoods and whereas the identification of the source is quite difficult it is not impossible. Salah has added that he will submit a complaint to the Attorney General requesting the identification of the source as it represents a real threat towards the Egyptian film industry that cannot be disregarded.
