As a major indicator for the direction of the future awards of the Oscars, the Directors Guild of America announced the nominees for its 2011 Outstanding Directorial Achievements Award. Two of the major absent names were for Terrence Malick and Steven Spielberg. Even though Malick won the top prize, Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for his ambitious, cosmic “Tree of Life”, he was not nominated to compete for the Hollywood Awards; perhaps the reflective nature of the film was an obstacle for that. Whereas the double return for Spielberg after a three year absence did not put him on the list of nominees. His “War Horse” was expected to get him this nomination. By earning his 5th nomination- and the 1st after 20 years- for his “Midnight in Paris”, Actor, Director and great Writer, Woody Allen, left a positive impact on this list. And as expected, Martin Scorsese very own “Hugo”, hit the list and is the closest to wining the Oscars so far.The rest of the nominations were for Alexander Payne for “The Descendants”, David Fincher for “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and French Director Michel Hazanavicius for “The Artist” were the film gathered most of the critics’ expectations and praises for this year. The DGA Award Winner will be announced on 28 January making it clearer to speculate the winner at the Oscars.
