Japanese Legendary Animation Filmmaker Miyazaki to Retire from Directing

Koju Hoshino, Studio Ghibli president revealed in a brief press conference in Venice Film Festival that Miyazaki will retire directing. Miyazaki is expected to give a full press conference in Tokyo next week.

Miyazaki, 72, is an Academy Award Winner for his iconic movie ‘Spirited Away’. He’s one of the most celebrated figures in animated film-making especially after working with Walt-Disney. He’s also the winner of a lifetime achievement award from the Venice Film Festival in 2005.

Miyazaki previously retired after ‘Princess Mononoke’ but returned to direct ‘Spirited Away’. ‘The Wind Rises’ his featured movie in Venice is a fictionalized biography of Jiro Horikoshi, who designed Japanese planes during the second world war.
