'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' Tops American Box Office for the Third Week

For the third consecutive week, ' The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' has managed to top the American box office list, despite several newcomers to theaters like Martin Scorsese's ' The Wolf of Wall Street.'

The Desolation of Smaug earned $29.8 million this week, adding them to its total gross that reached $190.3 million, while its worldwide gross broke the $500 million mark, according to recent reports.

In the second place on the American box office list came the animated Frozen, adding $28.8 million to its gross this week, and reaching a local sum of $248.3 million in its sixth week of release.

The comedy Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues backed down to the third place, after occupying the second last week, and earned $20.1 million, while American Hustle kept its fourth position from last week, making another $19.5 million in theaters.

The Wolf of Wall Street landed fifth after earning $18.5 million, after a $10 million opening day. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey and Jean Dujardin.

In the sixth position came Saving Mr. Banks, after earning $14 million, which was followed by the Ben Stiller-helmed The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, a comedy about a day-dreamer who escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies, but eventually wakes up when his life and that of his co-worker are threatened.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire reached a total gross of $391.1 million in its sixth week in theaters, after adding $10.2 million to its sum, while Ronin 47 came ninth in its first week of release, earning $9.8 million in addition to a low rating of 11% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. Finally, A Madea Christmas came last among the American box office's top ten films, after it earned $7.4 million.
