Epic visuals, decent storytelling

Cloud Atlas is an ambitious film. As a fan of the novel by the same name, I wondered how a 500+ page book could be squeezed into a feature-length movie. Although many plot lines were reduced and simplified, the narrative remained mostly solid, and if the storytelling occasionally left something to be desired, the incredible visuals more than made up for it.

Between the excellent costumes, the breath-taking CGI and the incredible makeup (when the credits roll at the end, you will most likely be surprised by at least a few of the roles played by familiar actors that you probably didn't recognize), the Cloud Atlas is a magnificent visual experience, best viewed on as large a screen as you can find. The music was also beautiful, and tied different parts of the film together well. The film is long -- really, really long -- but ultimately quite compelling.
