Assistant District Attorney Andy Barber takes over the inquiry after the police discover student Ben's murdered body in a park. In the course of the investigation, Andy unintentionally finds a knife hidden in his son Jacob's bedroom.

Andy tries to get rid of the knife, but is surprised when the police pursue and arrest his son, Jacob, after finding his fingerprint on the victim's clothing. Thus, Jacob's trial begins, and Andy is dismissed from the case.

Andy later confides in his wife and son that his father is in prison for murdering a girl in the past and asks fellow detective Duffy to help him access the suspect's file.

Continuing the investigation, Laurie gathers information about Andy's father's past, leading her to increasing psychological stress. Meanwhile, Andy clings to hope for Jacob's innocence, contacting everyone who knows Patz, searching for a lead that might reveal Patz is the real culprit.

Andy is forced to visit his father in prison to ask him to undergo a DNA test. Meanwhile, Derek shocks Andy by revealing Jacob's involvement with the Dark Web, while Laurie uncovers violent behavior in Jacob dating back to his early childhood.

Andy uncovers evidence that might convict Patz of Ben's murder through the testimony of a young man Patz had previously harassed, who reveals a previous relationship between him and Ben. Meanwhile, Jacob's doctor confirms that the "murder gene" is not present in his DNA.

The trial begins, and unexpected things unfold when the prosecutor surprises them by revealing a story that Jacob posted on a dark web site about a murder that took place in the garden square, which draws everyone's attention to Jacob as a suspect.

Jacob is cleared of murder after Patz confesses to the crime, but Andy accidentally discovers that Patz was forced to confess to a crime he didn't commit. When he tells Laurie the truth, she is deeply traumatized, leading her to seek to end her son Jacob's life.
