Set in the 14th century; when Franciscan monk William of Baskerville and his young apprentice show up at an abbey, they discover that a number of monks have been mysteriously slain. William must defy the Church's authority and use his vast intelligence alone to combat the sinister plot of monks in order to solve the crimes.
