British actor born in 1938 in Wimbledon, London. He pursued acting after finishing his military service in the Royal Medical Service, appearing in minor roles in the late 1950s. He landed his first major roles in the early 1960s in films like The Pirates of Blood River, The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll, and Night Creatures. He was very successful playing Athos in three films adapted from novels by Alexandre Dumas. He was also known for his roles in Oliver!, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, and Gladiator. He died of a heart attack in 1999, at age 61.
