He was born in Tunisia. His notable work includes Wounded Palm Trees, which was the fifth feature film that he directed. He is considered the first Tunisian to participate in the Cannes Festival with A Simple Story (1970). He won three times at the Carthage Film Festival; the Bronze Tanit Award for A Simple Story (1970), the Silver Tanit Award for the film Sejnane (1974), and the Gold Tanit Award for Aziza the film (1980).
