One of the pioneers of Egyptian folk art. Anwar began singing during his conscription, so whenever he found a wedding in his service area, he volunteered to sing (while he was wearing his uniform), so he was called Anwar El Askary. He started imitating one of the founders of the popular mawwal art, Muhammad Abdul Jalil. He used to improvise folk singing without music. The theater director Fayez Halawa hired him to sing in the play El Tawta Cafe, after which he rose to fame and made records.
