Born Anwar Muhammad Yahia Wagdy Al-Fattaal (October 1911 Cairo – May 1955 Stockholm) was an Egyptian actor, writer, director and producer of Syrian descent. His father (textile merchant), Yahia, immigrated to Egypt with his family in the 19th century for economic reasons. Anwar began his acting career as an extra in 1922 in the Youssef Wahby’s “Julius Caesar” stage play. He quickly leaped to stardom, played leading roles, directed and produced more than 90 Egyptian films between 1932 and 1955. He achieved particular success collaborating with his wife, Egyptian legend Laila Mourad.
