Born of a middle class family in Zahla - Lebanon, her father was a fabric vendor who was able to give her some education. Thorayya loved acting since her first years of school and excelled in the mother’s role. When she finished school she joined one of the numerous acting troupes in Lebanon. At the age of 25 she left Lebanon with her father, who wanted to try his luck in Egypt. They lived in Alexandria and she worked with ‘Aly al-Kassaar troupe. During her career on stage she presented 32 plays with different theatrical troupes. She never played the role of a young person, but instead she was either the mother or the aristocratic lady. Her features and her special smile helped her to excel.
