He was born in Wasit Governorate, Iraq. He completed his university studies and obtained a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts in 1970. After that, he worked as a teacher for nine years, then he worked in the field of culture. He also worked as a linguistic supervisor in the Arab Horizons magazine in the mid-eighties and as the editorial secretary of Asfar magazine. He was a member of the Central Council of the Union of Iraqi Writers. He has authored several books, including the novel A Window As Wide As a Dream (1977). Among his movies: The Lover (1985), and The Horseman and the Mountain (1987).
