An Egyptian poet and songwriter. He received his baccalaureate degree in 1940 and attended the Faculty of Law. His first song, 'The Butterfly", was broadcast on the Egyptian radio in 1939, when he was not more than 18 years old. He is famous for composing songs for Umm Kulthum, Abdel Halim Hafez, Fairuz, and many more. In addition to being a poet, he has written short stories and the lyrics of numerous songs in films, including My Father Is Above the Tree (1969) and City Lights (1972). He passed away on 9 February 1980, at age 59.
