A French Arabist and historian, born in Mèze, Hérault, France. He specialized in Arabic language and literature. He retired from the university in 1997. In cooperation with the Algerian researcher Jamel Eddine Bencheikh, he published an important translation of the first part of the tales of "One Thousand and One Nights." He is known for the movie Mad About Laila (1989).
