Hany Abu Assad is a Palestinian director and screenwriter born in Nazareth, Palestine on the 11th of October, 1961. He holds both the Israeli (where he was born) and the Dutch (to where he moved in 1980 to study engineering) passports.In 1992, Assad made his directorial debut, the short film "Manzel Waraqy" (Paper House). He then made "Alganna Al-aan" (Paradise Now), which won the Golden Globe award for best foreign film in 2005, in addition to three awards at the Berlin International Film Festival. In 2013, his second feature film "Omar" was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, and won the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard competition at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.
