A Palestinian-American director, producer, and screenwriter, born on November 27, 1976 in Omaha, Nebraska, to a Palestinian father and a Jordanian mother. She received her B.A. with honors in creative writing and communications from the University of Cincinnati, in addition to an M.F.A. in film from Columbia University School of the Arts in 2004. In 2009, Variety magazine included her in a list of the 10 most promising directors. She won multiple awards for her films. In 2006, her short film Make a Wish won the Press Award and the Special Mention of the Jury at the Clermont-Ferrand Festival. It also won the Muhr Award for Best Short Film at the Dubai Film Festival, while in 2009, her first feature film Amreeka won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Critics’ Week at the Cannes International Film Festival, and the Muhr Arab Award for Best Actress at the Dubai International Film Festival. In 2013, she made her second feature film, May In the Summer, in which she also starred. On television, she worked on the series The L Word as a writer.
